Google advances its artificial intelligence development with the introduction of Ironwood, its seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit. The newly developed custom chip represents Google’s strategic hardware breakthrough as it advances beyond gradual improvements to address the complex needs of its sophisticated Gemini models. Google developed Ironwood specifically to dominate the field of simulated reasoning, which they call “thinking,” and this chip promises to create a new age for AI technology.

Ironwood’s abilities derive from significant advancements in its performance capabilities along with innovative architectural design. Ironwood surpasses its TPU predecessors with much greater throughput capabilities and functions specifically within extensive liquid-cooled clusters. The newly improved Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) connects up to 9,216 individual chips within these clusters to achieve high-speed and efficient communication as well as data exchange. Google’s scalable architecture facilitates internal R&D activities and supports external developers via Google Cloud by providing configurations that span from 256-chip servers to complete 9,216-chip clusters.

Google asserts that Ironwood’s superior performance in speed and memory capacity, along with its power efficiency, will bring transformative effects to its AI environment, leading to major advancements. Ironwood’s robust computational infrastructure serves as a foundation for advanced AI models, which will enable breakthroughs across multiple domains such as natural language processing and machine learning, as well as agentic AI development. Future AI systems will function proactively with the ability to independently collect data while making decisions based on that information and executing tasks for users without needing detailed instructions. During its exploration of artificial intelligence frontiers, Google counts on Ironwood to enable major advancements.

The Driving Force Behind Ironwood

Google demonstrates its belief in the essential connection between sophisticated AI models and specialized hardware through its Ironwood development project. The Ironwood chip serves as a fundamental component in Google’s strategy to improve AI inference speeds and expand model context windows, thereby enabling the full capabilities of agentic AI. The “age of inference” paradigm shift describes a future where AI systems will take proactive actions to help users according to Google’s vision.

The computational strength of Ironwood becomes clear through its main hardware specifications. An Ironwood pod operating at full capacity delivers 42.5 Exaflops of inference computing performance. The computational efficiency of each Ironwood chip reaches 4,614 TFLOPs, showing substantial advancement beyond past TPU models. Ironwood’s advanced processing abilities are sustained through its newly upgraded memory architecture. The Ironwood chip features 192GB of high-bandwidth memory, which represents a sixfold improvement from the Trillium TPU’s memory capacity. The memory bandwidth now reaches 7.2 Tbps, which represents a substantial 4.5 times enhancement.

Google has created performance benchmarks for Ironwood, which use FP8 precision as the main evaluation metric. The company claims Ironwood “pods” achieve 24 times faster processing compared to similar parts of top supercomputers, but this statement requires careful examination. Google admits that certain supercomputing systems lack native support for FP8 precision, which affects performance comparisons. The analysis did not make direct performance comparisons with Google’s TPU v6 (Trillium). According to Google, Ironwood delivers twice the performance per watt of Trillium, showing better energy efficiency. According to a Google spokesperson, Ironwood continues the TPU v5p line while Trillium succeeds the TPU v5e. Trillium reached its maximum FP8 performance level at around 918 TFLOPS.
