BTS’ V Caught in Political Storm Over Coca-Cola Endorsement

BTS member Kim Taehyung, also known to ARMYs all over the world as V, has angered fans worldwide and been caught up in a major controversy over his endorsement of Coca-Cola Zero. His appointment to the role of brand ambassador was first announced on July 31, only for the news to be followed by an outpouring of criticism and demands for V to sever his connection with Coca-Cola. The most common accusations against V and BTS over the campaign include that their connection to the brand is “tone deaf” and “deeply disappointing” in light of the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The rollout for Coca-Cola Korea’s #BestCokeEver campaign began on Monday night, when an intriguing promo video was dropped. The commercial, which was highly stylized and cinematically lit, confirmed that V was to be the new face of the brand, replacing his label mates and girl group NewJeans. As noted by Anti, even though V working with Coca-Cola is a “regular endorsement move” for an artist of his stature, BTS’s connection to the brand quickly became highly controversial.

A Disconnect Over BTS’s Advocacy

One of the main causes of the controversy, which continues to grow by the hour, is that V’s affiliation with Coca-Cola contradicts BTS’ public stance over several issues, including BDS and Israel. In the past, BTS members have made comments on discrimination against Asians and shared support for the Black Lives Matter movement. BTS, like many other pop groups in South Korea, has carefully cultivated a public persona that’s socially conscious and actively anti-discrimination.

As Anti noted, in contrast, however, BTS has remained mostly silent over the genocide in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 33,000 Palestinians as of July 31. This silence, especially for a group with the international notoriety of BTS, has become more and more difficult to ignore and has turned the most recent news about V’s affiliation with Coca-Cola into a major controversy.

Past History and Bad Press for V and Coke

History and bad press for both V and Coke have compounded the issue and made the connection all the more problematic. V was, at the time, heavily criticized last year for posting a casual photo of McDonald’s fries. The criticism against V was relatively mild, as the fries image was first posted in October 2023, and McDonald’s is a common household brand with a ubiquitous global presence. To fans, however, V’s new Coke ad was the second step, after fries, in a direction that continues to diverge from BTS’ carefully maintained image.

Coca-Cola’s bad press on BDS and Israel also comes from many sources, including a major instance in 2024. Earlier this year, the company faced heavy backlash in Bangladesh for an ad in which it “explicitly denied any connections with the state of Israel.” Activists around the world soon responded with evidence to the contrary, pointing to the existence of Coca-Cola Israel as a separate subsidiary, which is based in Maale Adumim, one of the many illegal Israeli settlements in occupied territory. Several organizations, including a center for research, WhoProfits, that tracks corporate complicity in the Israeli occupation, list Coca-Cola Israel as an active entity, with all the implications and nuances of Israel’s well-documented role in the region.

In particular, reports say, Coca-Cola Israel operates in the Atarot Settlement Industrial Zone, in an area that was illegally occupied in 1967, while their Tabor Winery imports grapes from both the occupied West Bank and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. For many BDS supporters, Coca-Cola Israel’s presence in the settlements is unambiguous evidence of complicity in the occupation, making it a frequent target of boycotts and pro-Palestine campaigns. For fans, and the fans are already vocally expressing their frustration and anger on social media in their thousands, V’s endorsement of the brand, therefore, is sending a very particular message about what corporate complicity means to him.

Fan Outrage Against V Is Now on the Global Stage

Fans, especially international ARMYs who might not be as attuned to BDS as South Korean fans, are now raising hell on social media in a big way, calling for V and BTS to boycott Coke and denounce their collaboration with the brand. Demands for V to unaffiliate himself from the brand are being expressed in a myriad of ways, including the #BoycottCoke campaigns and independent messages.

“Dear Taehyung, BTS, Coca Cola has been operating on the stolen land of the Palestinians, some of whom are your ARMY. Please don’t work with and promote its products. Please educate yourself. Cancel the endorsement and stand with humanity.”

It’s not just V, as fans seem equally and collectively fed up with BTS’s general unwillingness to even acknowledge the crisis in Gaza. Many feel that BTS’s status as some of the most famous artists in the world gives them the power and the responsibility to at least comment on the situation and bring some level of attention to the genocide, if not much more.
