The Psychohistory War Continues in Foundation

Apple TV+ has unveiled the official trailer for the third season of Foundation, its expensive, visually ambitious series that is the network’s take on Isaac Asimov’s long-running sci-fi classic. The trailer hints at an unraveling galaxy, a new crisis of galactic proportions, and one of Asimov’s most powerful and mysterious villains, The Mule. The third season will be available weekly from July 11 to September 12, 2025.

Foundation has deviated significantly from Asimov’s source material. The most obvious departure is in the structure of the show, which is broken up into massive time jumps that span centuries. For example, the first season of Foundation ended with a time jump of 138 years. The second season followed with a pivotal moment in the saga known as the Second Crisis, with war looming between the Foundation and the Galactic Empire. The Foundation has chosen a far more radical path, weaponizing their brand of religious propaganda to convert planets. We were also introduced to the secretive “Mentalics” colony of people with psionic powers.

Season 3 makes an even bigger time jump than the first season, leaping 152 years after the events of the previous one. By that point, the story has been propelled into what is known as the Third Crisis in Asimov’s novels. “The Foundation is more powerful than ever before,” Apple TV+’s official synopsis of the season reveals. “The great Galactic Empire’s once-formidable Cleonic Dynasty is showing cracks. The two mighty forces that control the galaxy now find themselves with no choice but to ally against the greatest threat to either of them: the Mule, a warlord who commands military might and terrifying psionic abilities.”

The trailer picks up right where this description leaves off. Hari Seldon ominously narrates: “Centuries ago, when we foretold the end of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save our species. But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” Next, series regular Gaal Dornick’s voice can be heard with a tone of grave urgency: “We’re out of time.”

Enter the new villain, The Mule, played by Danish actor Pilou Asbæk. He’s not just a man with a knack for military strategy, or even one with an army at his command. His power is to influence and control the emotions of others: “I can turn enemies into allies,” he intones. “Hate into love. I just have to nudge.”

The action sequences in the trailer hint at how this power will come into play and show exactly how far-reaching the Mule’s influence can be. Blasts of colored light, searing explosions, skirmishes and battles, and the destruction of entire cities set the stage.

Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann will return as the three clones, Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, all descended from Emperor Hari Seldon. Jared Harris is back as Hari Seldon, Lou Llobell returns as Gaal Dornick, and Laura Birn returns as the all-powerful and enigmatic android, Eto Demerzel.

But there are a number of other notable additions to the cast for Foundation season 3. Alexander Siddig is joining the cast as Dr. Ebling Mis, a passionate devotee of Hari Seldon’s work and a self-taught psychohistorian. Troy Kotsur will play Preem Palver, the man in charge of an entire planet of psychics. And Cherry Jones is on board as Foundation ambassador Quent. Other actors coming to the Foundation this season include Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as the larger-than-life Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.

The Fate of a Galaxy in Flux

Foundation is based on Asimov’s concept of a fictional social science called “psychohistory,” which predicts future events by using mathematics and sociology. But with the Mule’s manipulative powers of disruption and influence, that much seems to be at risk. If the most accurate science available in Foundation’s world can’t predict what comes next, then what comes next may not be based on any kind of probability at all.

As far as world-building and sci-fi visuals go, there’s no shortage of them in the Foundation trailer. From wide-open space vistas to rich civilizations and high-octane action, it’s all there. But more than anything, it’s the emotion of the conflict Foundation is about to find itself in that we’re left with by the trailer’s end. Can the Galactic Empire and the Foundation work together? Can psychohistory itself be saved from the Mule’s assault on rational thought? And most of all, is there any future, any version of the future, where the galaxy doesn’t end up descending into chaos?

Season 3 looks like it’s going to keep building on what has been set in place by Asimov, the previous seasons, and the showrunners. Characters are going to have to grow deeper and more complex to deal with the threat of the Mule. But the stakes and the world-building in which these characters exist look like they will be massive as well. Season 3 of Foundation begins on July 11, 2025, with new episodes releasing weekly until September 12, 2025.
