Jurassic World Rebirth Is Set to Dominate the Summer Box Office
Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the fourth film in the Jurassic World series and the seventh in the Jurassic Park franchise, in the run-up to its summer release. The film, which stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, will debut in theaters across the United States on July 2, 2025, just in time to make its dino-sized presence felt over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Rebirth is a true reboot of the franchise that takes place on the same island as the original Jurassic Park but is otherwise intended to reset the story and reintroduce the series to audiences. The story itself has a familiar setup, with a new crew of experts gathering for a high-stakes mission and running afoul of prehistoric creatures along the way. In this case, the specialists are gathered to collect genetic material from some of the largest and most dangerous dinosaurs left in existence, including the largest land, sea, and air dinosaurs. The reason for this seemingly suicidal mission: one of the specimens contains DNA that could lead to the development of a life-saving drug.
Rebirth’s team of specialists is led by Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett, who is revealed to be an ex-special forces expert in covert operations. A covert group is also said to be working to get the genetic material themselves, though this mission gets complicated when they intersect with a family of boaters whose trip is interrupted by a dinosaur attack. The survivors are left stranded on the shore of an island, a long-forgotten research outpost of Jurassic Park that may have some even nastier secrets of its own, according to the trailer.
Get Ready to Fly a Pterosaur and Meet More Dinosaurs
Jurassic World Rebirth has been under development for several years, and Johansson’s team was introduced in an initial trailer in February. Her team includes Mahershala Ali, who was introduced in that trailer as Zara, a mercenary working for the secretive group. That first trailer also introduces Rupert Friend’s Martin Krebs, who works for a pharmaceutical company and displays an immediate interest in the genetic material; Jonathan Bailey’s paleontologist Henry Loomis; and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked boating family. The Delgado family also includes Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda as his children, while Bechir Sylvain is also part of Johansson’s team. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge are listed among the cast as well, but their roles are as yet unannounced.
The trailer reuses much of the footage introduced in February, but those elements are reorganized to emphasize the main characters, visual scale, and the series’ core thrills. New footage in the trailer includes a lab scene in which one of the workers gets trapped with a cage full of T-Rex and has to call for help before it’s too late. The viewer can expect a healthy dose of action, tension, and dinosaur carnage throughout the film, as suggested by the trailer’s final shot, in which Johansson dispatches an enemy before making a daring escape.
A primary new scene from the trailer is the attempted heist of one of the pterosaur eggs, which the trailer describes as “belonging to Quetzalcoatlus northropi, a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” The film also offers brief glimpses of the familiar raptors, while the trailer dialogue teases the arrival of a major new sea predator: the mosasaur. The trailer’s final shot suggests the island was used by Jurassic Park to “hold the worst of the worst”: dinosaurs that were considered too problematic or difficult to handle for display or research. This supplies a fascinating twist: the island could be a graveyard for dinosaurs that never made it out of the lab.
Jurassic World Rebirth returns the series to its island roots while promising a new take on the franchise’s DNA-centered theme of blending high-stakes science and moral gray areas in stories about people facing off against prehistoric creatures. Johansson’s character, in particular, should bring a new flavor of grit and tactical survival to what has been, up to this point, a series more about stunt-driven action and dinosaur attacks. Universal is hoping this new installment will give the film series a shot in the arm by offering a relatable team of characters and greater stakes than a mission just to recapture dinosaurs.
Jurassic World Rebirth will be available in theaters across the United States beginning July 2, 2025.
