The Microsoft-owned GitHub platform for software development collaboration introduced a major update to its widely used AI coding assistant, GitHub Copilot. The organization announced a new “premium requests” feature that will restrict access for subscribers using enhanced AI models beyond the basic services to perform advanced coding tasks. Users who depend on Copilot’s advanced features may face higher expenses due to this new change.
New Tiered System for Advanced AI Models
The central component of the announcement revolves around the establishment of usage restrictions for those who select advanced AI models away from the standard one for particularly demanding computational tasks. Premium request limits will be enforced when users utilize “agentic” coding techniques that allow AI to independently generate code, as well as when they perform multi-file modifications. GitHub Copilot subscribers retain unlimited access to OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but their monthly usage of newer models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet will now be limited.
Starting May 5th, users who subscribe to the standard Copilot Pro plan at $20 per month will receive 300 premium requests each month under this new system. Organizations that use Copilot Business receive 300 premium requests per user each month, and Copilot Enterprise users get 1,000 premium requests per user. The Business and Enterprise tiers will undergo changes implemented from May 12th through May 19th.
Options for High-Volume Users and a New Premium Plan
GitHub offers additional options for users who need more than their set limit of premium requests. Users enrolled in affected plans can buy extra premium requests at $0.04 each. The pay-as-you-go model provides an adaptable service that meets the needs of users with temporary demands for high-level AI functionality.
GitHub now offers a new subscription plan called Copilot Pro+ at a rate of $39 monthly. The premium plan includes an allowance of 1,500 premium requests each month, and subscribers gain “access to the best models” available, such as OpenAI’s highly anticipated GPT-4.5. Copilot Pro+ has been created to serve users who need top-tier AI models for their coding work consistently.
Reflecting the Costs of Advanced AI Computation
Copilot’s new pricing approach for its superior AI models came after the AI coding platform Devin revealed their changes to their pricing structure the day before. The simultaneous emergence of these advanced systems demonstrates a widespread movement in AI development tools triggered by the intensive computational requirements needed for their operation. The reasoning-focused models, such as Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet, achieve improved accuracy and reliability, but their rigorous fact-checking demands extensive processing power and time, leading to increased operational costs for providers.
GitHub introduced premium requests to synchronize the pricing of its services with the real computational costs required to operate advanced AI models. GitHub maintains access to advanced AI technology and user flexibility across different needs through a tiered system implementation.
Copilot’s Significant Contribution to GitHub’s Growth
The introduction of usage-based pricing for premium models has not hindered GitHub Copilot, which remains a major revenue source for Microsoft. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated in August of last year that GitHub’s revenue growth reached over 40% in 2024 due to Copilot. According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Copilot’s business volume currently exceeds the total revenue that GitHub generated at the time Microsoft bought it seven years ago. The swift acceptance of AI-driven coding tools and their meaningful impact on developer work highlight how these technologies have become integral to GitHub’s financial achievements. The growth path remains intact, with premium requests serving as an enhancement to GitHub’s monetization approach during technological development.
