Rapper Snoop Dogg has landed in hot water again for his latest homophobic comments about LGBTQ+ themes in children’s movies, in this case, Pixar’s 2022 release Lightyear.

The hip-hop star explained on Sarah Fontenot’s It’s Giving podcast last week that he brought his grandson to see Lightyear only to “lose my mind” during a brief scene showing a same-sex couple. In the movie, one of Buzz Lightyear’s crew members was revealed to be part of a same-sex couple, in a moment that includes a kiss between two women.

The rapper said that he was caught off guard when his grandson asked him how women could have babies. “Wh,y my grandson, in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” Snoop recalled on the podcast. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”

Snoop said he didn’t know how to answer the question. “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he said. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

Snoop went on to note that the comments he found most disturbing were the questions from his grandson that he didn’t have the “skill set” to address. “It threw me for a loop,” he added. “These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

Progressive Outrage and a Larger Fight Over Inclusion

His comments have already angered progressives online, especially since Snoop Dogg is set to perform at the Australian Football League’s 2023 Grand Final later this year. Australian publication PinkNews reported that AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan had responded to inquiries over the rapper’s set. According to the report, McLachlan said that they had “no plans to change” the lineup and no intention of canceling Snoop’s participation. The AFL has long pushed for inclusion and diversity at the league level and has yet to comment on Snoop’s appearance.

Lightyear first became the focus of conservative criticism in 2022 when the kiss scene was revealed, and some objected that LGBTQ+ content in a movie for children was inappropriate. The backlash was intense enough that the scene was removed from the movie. Disney ultimately reinstated the scene after internal pushback and demands from Pixar staff and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.

Lightyear star Chris Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear in the movie, was also forced to respond to the controversy during an interview with Reuters Television at the time. The Avengers star was unapologetic. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said of those upset over the same-sex moment. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

The movie centers on “real” Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, the space-age science-fiction character who exists in the Toy Story universe as the inspiration for the toy Buzz Lightyear. Despite robust marketing and the allure of the Toy Story name, Lightyear received mixed reviews and did not fare well at the box office, making just over $226 million worldwide.

The rapper’s recent comments also echo earlier controversies about LGBTQ+ inclusion in children’s movies. Supporters of representation and diversity say that they help to normalize the existence of LGBTQ+ people for all children, while opponents like Snoop Dogg often find the question-and-answer portion of such films the most objectionable.
